Twenty-five minutes in, we looked comfortable and like it was going to be a 4-0 or 5-0 win – after that, it was hard to watch.

I am not sure if Pardew told them to do as little as possible to contain the win and move on to next week, or whether the players just decided the game was won, but the urgency and desire to get forward was lost after that second goal.

One thing the win at Exeter showed me was that we need some new blood in the team. Robson-Kanu and Nyom looked like players that had won a competition to play with the first team – if you can’t make yourself stand out and look good against a League Two side, then it’s time to re-evaluate them as Premier League standard players.

On to Jonny Evans, if the value of £25million comes in, we have to accept. Last season, Jonny was fantastic for us, the best centre-back I have seen at The Hawthorns in a long time, but this season he looks a shadow of the player he used to be.

I’m not sure if it was the tactics of Pulis that have done this to him or whether its a lack of interest, either way Ahmed Hegazi has been a class above Evans and I would be more than willing to sell as long as the money is reinvested into a goalscorer.

So finally a victory, albeit a subdued hard-fought win against lowly Exeter.

And that just about sums up our season,it relates to the standard of football we are playing.

I don’t think much can be gained from the Cup game, other than Robson Kanu needs a rollicking and we are desperate for a goalscorer.

The workout gained would have helped Alan Pardew more so.

The real business arrives Saturday against Brighton where we must simply win.

The hope is that the Cup win may instil some much-needed confidence and hopefully the team can move forward.

As for the actual game, well Pardew summed it up best...’we were expected to win’. And that’s all that can be said – no-one for me excelled and as a Premier League outfit they did what was needed, let’s hope it starts a similar pattern going into this weekend.

The Exeter win is merely papering over the cracks.

We look at the minute like a team destined for the drop.

Even though there have been some small signs of improvement under Alan Pardew, I personally feel he just doesn’t have the players available to him to get us out of this mess.

The only way I can see us having any chance of survival is if Pardew is given the opportunity to bring in some new players ASAP. If not, we might as well start preparing for life in the Championship now.

It’s absolutely crucial a striker and creative midfielder are brought in immediately. I know the majority of deals are done towards the end of the January window, but for me we need to be doing business earlier than that if we are to give ourselves hope of getting out of this mess.

Somehow, even after not winning since our second game, we are still in touching distance of the teams above us, but that gap is gradually getting bigger.

Some decent attacking additions in the immediate future would give the team that much-needed lift at a real critical stage of the season. I just worry that if we take too long to bring them in, the season could already be over.
