Tipton Life Interviews

In a bit of change to the way we do things at the This Is Tipton blog, we've done a series of interviews with people from Tipton. We're going to find out a little bit more about them and hopefully introduce you to some real characters.

The first interviewee is comedian Martin Huburn. Martin is a 39 year old Christian Stand Up Comedian from Tipton. He's been described by Show me the Funny Winner, Patrick Monahan, as being Cuddly, Fat and Funny. Bet you never knew we had Tipton had a real-life Stand Up Comedian (yes, I know some people are going to tell me Tipton is full of comedians, jokers and people having a laugh but Martin does it for a living!!).

Tiptonite is a show full of cheeky but clean anecdotes of Martin's successes and failings as he attempts to put Tipton back on the map."

Martin tells me he used to be a professional wrestler but after wrestling I wanted a new challenge and got involved in Stand Up Comedy. Somewhat of a departure you may say!

"I started in Entertainment at a young age, I was doing tap and gymnastic dance shows at The Old Rep theatre in Birmingham at the age of 4", says Martin.

"I've met a lot of celebrities through wrestling, people like Kenny Baker (the man inside R2D2 in Star Wars) who was a real wrestling fan. I met Wincy Willis last year at a comedy show, she wasn't as nice as she is on the TV. However, I did tell a joke about her on stage so she wasn't too impressed", he says

He's also met more down-to-earth people "I was doing a show in Bradford and bumped in to a women who lived by St Marks Road. She said she lived behind Asda and I said "What? In a skip?"

I asked Martin what he found most challenging about being a comedian, "Most people think it's the lonely medium of standing up in front of a room full of strangers, but like I mentioned, I've been doing that most of my life. I think the most challenging thing as a comedian is facing the M6 on a Friday when you're trying to get to a show."

When asked about what the best thing was about Tipton Martin said "My house. Does that count? If not then I love the Barge and Barrel and Mad O'Rourkes Pie Factory. I love my food." I think we can all agree the Desperate Dan Pie is a work of art.

As part of the interview series, we're also asking all our interviewees daft questions about which of the following they prefer. Here's what Martin said:

Princes End or Dudley Port?

Princes End, who doesn't like getting woken up at 4am by the sound of ferrell horses at your back door.

Gray Paes or Faggots?

Wow, only in the Black Country can we get away with using that word. But Faggots, chips and paes any day.

Bread Pudding or Tinned Fruit and Bread and Butter?

Bread puddin', loads of sugar. Nom Nom Nom.

Victoria Park or Jubilee Park?

Jubilee if I have to chose one, but think I'm too old for the park now.

Willingsworth or Alex?

Neither, I went to school in Birmingham, I did get a real edumacation!!

You can see Martin perform at The Barge and Barrel on Tuesday 20th December. "It's an 8:30 start and it's free to get in! How good's that?" Sounds goods to us Martin; we'll see you there!!

Thanks to Martin for being our first to take part in our interview series. You can find out more about his upcoming gigs at https://www.martinhuburn.com/.
