The Christian Life Centre in Blakenhall in Wolverhampton has received £500 to help it stock its Food Larder, a weekly foodbank for families at risk of poverty.

The donation came from the Rotary Club of Bilston and Wolverhampton West, for which Blakenhall councillor Jasbinder Dehar is a member.

Councillor Dehar said the Rotarians had been asked who to donate £500 to and she asked if it could be donated to the Christian Life Centre to help fund the project.

She said: "The funding will go to support local families at risk of food poverty and to work in partnership with three local primary schools in Blakenhall, which are Graiseley, Goldthorn Hill and St Lukes.

"They will identify the families most at need and it will help people to come on a Friday and take the food they need for the weekend.

"We'll be using this money to provide essential food and non-food items for the Food Larder to help stop families going hungry over the weekend."

The Food Larder has a range of items available to pick up, including tinned foods, dry pasta and canned meat, bread, flour, anti-bacterial wash, toilet roll, soap, toothpaste and washing up liquid.

Councillor Dehar said she was working with Life Centre finance director Lorraine McCarthy to organise food deliveries and spoke about what it meant to help a service like the Food Larder.

She said: "As a Rotarian, we are here to help the community and it's good to combine it with my role as the councillor for Blakenhall.

"We have a lot of people who need the foodbank and it's good to be able to provide that service going forward."
