RSPCA inspector Dave Hollinshead was called to Windmill Shopping Centre in Smethwick during Halloween weekend.

Dave said: “Staff found her running around the store on Saturday night and were fairly surprised; she was certainly an unexpected find.

“She’s really friendly so the shop staff managed to catch her, pop her in a box and gave her some food and water. They kept her in a secure room at the shop overnight and I went to collect her on Sunday morning.

“I think she must be an escaped pet as she’s really friendly and easy to handle. We’ve put her photo on PetsLocated and we’re hoping her owners will come forward for her; it’d be lovely to reunite them.”

Emily, store supervisor at the Smethwick Matalan store, said: “I wasn’t sure quite what to expect when I heard there was an animal in-store, but then I saw this cute little ferret peeking at me from under our Amazon collection lockers! I was a bit scared of her at first but she was actually fine and quite tame, and I’m just glad I was able to help – I hope she can be reunited with her owners soon!”

The little ferret, who is polecat in colour - nicknamed Chanel - is now in the care of RSPCA Newbrook Farm, in Birmingham. She’s a young adult thought to be around eight to 12-months-old.

“Anyone who recognises this sweet little gal should get in touch with us by calling 0300 123 8018 or contact Newbrook Farm directly,” Dave added.

The RSPCA encourages all pet owners to get their pets microchipped so that if they go missing they can be reunited quickly.
