Lee Asbury grabbed the victim and snatched the keys to her Hyundai Getz in Farnborough Road, Castle Vale, on July 21.

The woman, in her 20s, screamed as the 31-year-old tried to push her away – with a man, who has not been identified, heading over to intervene.

Asbury threw her back the keys as officers rushed to the scene, where another witness had tracked him to a nearby street – and seem him discard three knives in a bush.

Asbury, of no fixed address, was arrested and has pleaded guilty to robbery and knife possession. He was jailed for four years at Birmingham Crown Court today.

DC Claire Smith, from force CID at West Midlands Police, said: "The woman was understandably left shaken by the ordeal, but fortunately the good Samaritan stepped in.

"We still don't know who he was, but his intervention was vital.

"We were able to arrest Asbury in under an hour and secured strong evidence against him. It led to his guilty plea and being put behind bars."
