The 34-year-old man was detained on Thursday night after West Midlands Police issued an appeal for information on Wednesday.

Officers had been looking for a suspect since the fire happened in Farren Road, Northfield, Birmingham, on Easter Monday.

The woman and children who were inside the house managed to get out before the fire ripped through the property at around 8.30am.

The suspect was arrested at a property in Rubery and 41-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both men remained in police custody on Friday.

Inspector Dave Sproson, from West Midlands Police, said: "We have had a team of officers working around the clock dedicated to tracing the suspect.

“Thankfully nobody was seriously injured but the fire destroyed the property and it could have turned out a lot worse.

“The family have since been safeguarded and are being kept up to date with this latest development."
