Cash machine gang crash into police after raiding Cannock Chase Hospital

A gang of thieves escaped after targeting a hospital and crashing their getaway car into police.

The burglars struck at Cannock Chase Hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning..

Police believe five offenders were involved and arrived in a white van and silver Nissan 350Z at around 3am.

Staffordshire Police said the gang stole from a cash machine, however staff at the hospital have disputed this and said the crooks did not break into any ATMs.

The gang all managed to escape despite one of the cars involved crashing into a police car.

Police have not confirmed what was taken or whether any of the cars involved have been found.

One of the entrances to the hospital was closed on Thursday morning as forensic teams examined the scene.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said: "Detectives are investigating a burglary at Cannock Chase Hospital on Thursday.

"Police were called at 3am to reports of a break-in at the hospital involving a white van and silver Nissan 350.

"Officers believe five offenders were involved in the incident and stole from the cash machine.

"One of the vehicles collided with police car once it fled the scene.

"Anyone with any information should message Staffordshire Police on Facebook or Twitter quoting incident number 60 of 30 January, call 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A spokeswoman for The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: "No one sustained any injures and patients were not affected by this incident."
