Tettenhall Pool to stay shut for three months as opening delayed

Tettenhall Pool will remain shut for the next three months - and will not open until after the school summer holidays have started.

Work is yet to start on repairing the pool after its future was confirmed following a public consultation earlier this year.

It means the pool will not be ready as usual for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend but instead is expected to open in August, possibly just for six weeks.

The news will disappoint families who flock to the pool in warm weather each year after its normal opening at spring bank holiday at the end of May.

The pool is popular throughout the summer months

Confirming the delay, Wolverhampton South West MP Eleanor Smith said: "The council's head of project and works has told me work will start on the pool on May 28. Completion date is set for August 1.

"Let's hope for a long hot August so we can all enjoy it."

The open-air pool was at risk of closing for good after Wolverhampton Council said it would either repair Tettenhall Pool or create an outdoor gym.

It came as part of proposals to use about £180,000 from companies who recently built new residential developments in the area, to improve Upper Green and Penk Rise.

But more than 95 per cent of the 3,796 responses to the public consultation rejected plans for the gym and decided to save Tettenhall Pool.

Revamp

The pool at Tettenhall’s Upper Green closed on September 11 last year.

But council staff were told the pool’s water treatment and pumping systems no longer complied with legislation and guidance and needed a revamp.

Without repairs, it would only be possible to open the pool for a limited time but proposed repair work could provide a further 20-year lifespan, the council claimed.

Last month, Wolverhampton Council said it was in discussions with a specialist contractor to agree a timetable of works and ensure repairs were "completed in time for summer".

Spokeswoman Danielle Taylor added: "We have a responsibility to ensure the pool complies with health and safety. We will communicate the plans to residents in advance of the summer and confirm when it will be ready.”

A new path will also be installed to link the pool and car park to the existing path, which runs across the green, and there will be a revamp of Penk Rise children’s play area.
