The world of fantasy and fiction was bright to life in the Black Country when GEEKS Wolvo Comic-Con 2017 was held at Wolverhampton Racecourse.

Up to 1,500 were thought to have turned out to the event held on Saturday.

Among the costumes that could be seen were Doctor Evil and Mine Me, the Ghostbusters and the Joker.

Comic fans were joined by celebrities who sat at stalls around the venue to meet fans, sign autographs and pose for pictures.

The TV stars included Shaun ' ‎The Dark Destroyer' Wallace and Mark 'The Beast' Labbett off ITV's The Chase , Hattie Hayridge off Red Dwarf, former Doctor Who actor Colin Baker and Anna Karen who starred in On The Buses.

Comic fan Wayne Taylor, aged 37 from Smethwick, was among those who turned out in force in fancy dress.

He went along as the The Joker - wearing a full costume and the matching face paint to go with the character appearance.

He said: "I came to the event because I like meeting people and I have always been a fan of comics."

Meanwhile Vincent Lewis, 64, from Rebel Records and Toys, in Cannock, attended the event as Dr Evil and Mini Me, the villain off the film series Austin Powers.

He said: "Quite a bit of planning went into my costume. I am impressed with how the convention went."

Chasers Shaun and Mark were present along a line of celebrities, situated along the side of a room, who fans could pay to have their autographs signed and photographs taken with.

Shaun said: "I'm a Marvel Comics fan myself. I enjoy attending comic cons, it gives me a chance to meet fans and say thank you for supporting us."

Around 60 trade stalls were presented inside Dunstall Park, offering memorabilia of all shapes and sizes.

Props were all on display including Daleks, a TARDIS and a Star Wars racing vehicle.

It was the second time the convention had been held at the venue.

Organiser Mark Longman said: "It has been a good event, it was a little slow to start but it picked up once the pay on the door was set up.

"We have 12 guests (from TV) including Colin Baker, the Doctor Who actor, and two of the Chaser's.

"We have got about 60 traders here as well. Throughout the day we expect about 1,500 to 2,000 people to turn up."

Organisers are looking to hold the event again next year, around May or June time, with a date set to be announced soon.

A family-of-three came along dressed as the Ghostbusters.

Niall Chambers, 51, his wife Amanda 49 and daughter Anya, 11, travelled down from Derbyshire to take part in the event.

They had the uniforms and replica backpack guns to match the characters off the film series.

Niall said: "We are part of the Superheroes Cosplay Team, who raise money for Ashgate Hospicecare in Chesterfield.

"The exhibition is really good and it is nice to have TV stars here."
