Irish Wolves fans meet their heroes

Wolves are flying the flag in Ireland this week – and hoping to win a few extra fans as well.

Irish Wolves started up again two weeks ago following a meeting in Dublin and a group of 30 fans from all over the Emerald Isle attended the latest training session at Carton House Hotel in Maynooth.

A previous fans group disbanded a few years ago but there has been a rise in popularity in gold and black fortunes, because of manager Mick McCarthy and players such as Kevin Doyle.

Chairman Andy Taylor, 35, is originally from Alveley near Bridgnorth and moved to Ireland to work three years ago.

Primary school teacher Andy, who now lives in County Mayo, is looking to spread the word on Wolves.

After forming a committee at the meeting, Andy is now looking to set up a website to attract the growing following in Ireland.

He was joined by treasurer James Kilcoyne and website co-ordinator Keith Gibson, as the group met McCarthy and the players.

Andy said: "I became aware that there might be Wolves fans when I met one from around the corner from where I live in Westport.

"Through the fans website, Molineux Mix, I thought there must be others and I met more.

"Then I advertised on Facebook and the numbers shot up to 135."

One dedicated fan with the group, Mick McQuillan, a 58-year-old carpenter from Cavan, 60 miles north of Dublin, is a Steve Bull Stand season ticket holder who attended 32 games last season home and away.

He regularly takes a 6.30am plane from Dublin, returning at 10pm.

Mick became hooked after first watching Wolves in 1968.
