But Andy Johnson's flowing locks have also made him a cult hero amongst Baggies supporters.

Now, though, the former Wales international has vowed to shave off his iconic barnet in a bid to raise £10,000 for the NHS.

The entire nation has been touched by the efforts of the National Health Service as we continue to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

But Johnson, who is known as AJ, is determined to give something back – even if it means losing the head of hair he loves.

"For those of you who know me, you’ll know how much this is really going to hurt me,” he said.

“But we’re doing it for a great cause – we’re doing it for the NHS, who are out there putting their lives and their families’ lives at risk at the moment, to help us get over this horrible, horrible disease.

“We’re going to try and reach £10,000, and I want to reach £10,000 or I’m not doing it! With your help, I will do it.

“Please guys – I’m not asking for £10, £5, just a bit of spare change, £1, anything like that.

"There’s enough supporters in football, and this has really brought our nation closer together.

"Let’s all stand together on this and show our togetherness by donating and getting me to have a shaved head - which is going to devastate me, but is for a great cause.

“Please give whatever you can and thank you very much.”

The money Johnson raises will be given to the Dudley Group NHS Charity.
