Albion will appeal Jay Rodriguez's straight red card after head coach Darren Moore labelled it 'a nothing challenge'.

Rodriguez was shown a straight red in the 65th minute of today's 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday for an apparent stamp on Marco Matias by referee Andy Davies.

But replays suggest the striker was trying to jump over the Wednesday man on the floor while his eyes were on the ball.

"When I saw the red card go up for Jay I was so surprised because Jay's an honest hardworking individual," said Moore. "When he came off he said 'gaffer, I didn't touch him'. I said 'ok, I believe you'.

"I've looked at the video footage and it's something I would like to carry forward as a club and ask the officials to look into. It looked a nothing incident.

"While I can understand in the heat of the moment and quickness of play you might see it a different way.

"From my angle and with different video footage, we can be a bit more clearer. But I'd like to appeal it because it's a straight red and carries a three-game ban."

Albion will send their appeal to the Football Association straight away because the Baggies have a match away at Blackburn Rovers on New Year's Day and Dwight Gayle is already out injured.

"We'll be getting it in straight away," confirmed Moore. "It looked a nothing incident from what I've seen thus far. We'll see if we can come together as officials and a club."

Wednesday caretaker boss Lee Bullen was also surprised to see Rodriguez get a red.

"If I'm being honest, when the challenge came in I thought it was maybe a yellow," said Bullen. "I was surprised he held the red up.

"Actually it seemed to galvanise them a little bit, Darren can be pleased with the reaction of his players."

Moore made a triple substitution immediately after the red card, which he had already readied.

And Albion kept knocking on the door despite having ten men, before equalising in the 95th minute through Chris Brunt.

"He did it (a triple sub) with us at home as well!" said Bullen. "He took of his two top scorers and we were thinking 'what's he doing?'

"But they came back and drew 2-2. He works his subs alright!"
