Darren Moore: Finishing cost West Brom in 'bizarre' game

Darren Moore said Derby's clinical finishing in front of goal was the only difference in what he labelled a 'bizarre' game at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies' five-game winning streak in the league at home came to an abrupt end tonight when they were humbled 4-1 by Derby County.

Albion looked jittery at the back, but Moore believed there wasn't much to separate the sides, and said his team merely failed to capitalise on the visitors' mistakes in the same way as the Rams.

He also said the two shouts for penalties in the first half changed the game and claimed untimely injuries hamstrung his options off the bench.

"It was a bizarre game," said Moore. "There were lots of chances at both ends of the pitch for both teams, One team was very clinical, the other was off-colour for whatever reason.

"At 2-0, there were a couple of incidents that could have gone our way.

"The boy (Matt Phillips) got flagged for offside and then it looked like (Scott) Malone caught Dwight, not intentionally, but he caught him.

"We might get something from that incidents and those things change the game.

"But take nothing away from Derby, they were very clinical, and got their goals at important times."

Albion were jittery at the back, and made too many errors that were pounced on by the Rams. But Moore believed things could have turned out differently on another night.

"I thought West Brom was in the ascendancy," he said. "We had some half chances that in recent weeks we've capitalised on. It was a bad day at the office.

"The changing point of the game was the incident with Dwight. From where I was standing, Dwight wouldn't go down like that, whether it was a penalty or free-kick I'll leave up to you. But the players stayed on it, they huffed and puffed."

When Moore was asked about his side's mistakes at the back, he said: "You saw Derby make mistakes tonight and we didn't capitalise.

"They gave balls away as well, we didn't capitalise. (Richard) Keogh gave the ball away and we didn't pull it back. The two teams played very similar, they got the goals and we never.

"There was gaps and spaces in their defence as well, but we didn't capitalise on them. We weren't quite on it."

Moore also bemoaned injuries to Gayle and Kieran Gibbs, who were both forced off at half-time.

"We had crucial injuries at crucial times, Dwight had to come off, " he said. "That meant I made two subs at half time and it limits you. As the game wore on we didn't have any fresh legs to bring on."

Rams boss Frank Lampard thinks his team could have scored even more goals than the four they did rack up.

"We realised early in the game that when the ball turned over we could break quickly," he said. "There were times when we didn't so maybe there were more goals for us.

"We could have killed the game in the first half.

"No disrespect to West Brom who could have scored one or two more themselves but we could have had more.

"We should have had three by half-time, it was a good performance and a very good result."
