The long-serving Northern Irishman has made 364 appearances for the Baggies, moving him clear of legendary left-back Derek Statham on 363.

His contract is up in the summer, but included in the deal is a one-year extension due to be triggered by appearances towards the end of this season.

That would extend Brunt’s stay at The Hawthorns into his 12th season, and the 33-year-old hopes to hit another century next year.

"If I ended up going past 400 games that would be great because especially nowadays, with the turnover of players, people tend to move on pretty quickly for various reason, so setting that kind of number of appearances here would feel special," he told Albion News.

“The idea that I’m in the top 25 of all time here, that’s a pretty amazing thing. Those milestones are nice but I don’t tend to keep on top of that until you keep telling me.

“I came here ten years ago and I wanted to get in the team, I wanted to get promoted, I wanted to play in the Premier League and I wanted to play as many games as possible for the Albion.

“You don’t think about records, or milestones in that way, but it’s nice to achieve those things.

“What I can’t work out is how Tony Brown managed to play twice as many games as I have! It’s a frightening achievement, no wonder they built him a statue! Nobody deserves it more after all that.”

Brunt has seven assists from 19 appearances this season and his rallying performance against Huddersfield last weekend stood out on a poor day for the Baggies.

After clapping the home fans, he stormed into the dressing room and laid into his team-mates before questioning Alan Pardew’s tactics.

Speaking before that match, he said: “It’s been one of the most frustrating seasons I can remember because we’ve been so close in so many games to getting much better results.

“Four of five of the draws we’ve had could easily have been wins and if we’d seen those out, the league table would look a lot different.

“In a different season, a different scenario, we could easily be sitting tenth in the league but ifs and buts are no use, it’s what actually happens that matters and we’ve been guilty all season of letting points get away from us.

“We’re bottom of the league but with a bit of a gap to make up. Given that run we had of 20 games without a win or whatever it was, you’d think normally you would be 12 or 15 points adrift, so we can take some heart from the fact that we’re still just about in touch.

“There’s enough points available for us to dig ourselves out of trouble, no matter what goes on elsewhere.”
