Ally Robertson: Huge point for West Brom, now for Manchester United

There is nothing worse in football than being in the relegation zone at Christmas.

It’s hugely disappointing for the fans. And the with games coming thick and fast, it’s no confidence boost for the players, writes Ally Robertson.

That’s why the 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Wednesday really was a fantastic point for Alan Pardew’s side.

Crystal Palace’s win over Watford on Tuesday had of course seen the Baggies fall into the bottom three.

If that’s not a wake-up call I don’t know what is.

But they responded with an impressive performance at Anfield. It was certainly a lot better than we have played this season.

And we could have won the game, we created some decent chances.

What was really pleasing was seeing us play a little bit higher up the pitch. And we got that point to ensure we got out of the drop zone straight away.

Next up it’s Manchester United which is of course a very difficult game. But it seems there is a little bit of a hangover engulfing Jose Mourinho’s side following their defeat to Manchester City.

Okay, they beat Bournemouth 1-0 on Wednesday. But they looked flat. And I think we can capitalise.

United losing against City has made it almost impossible for them to win the Premier League.

And the fact it was against their rivals, and at home, it makes it even more painful.

It was so important for them not to get beat. But they did. And you sense they are still reeling from that.

Elsewhere this week, I saw we have been linked with a move for Bournemouth striker Benik Afobe.

I’ve said many times in this column I am a big fan of Salomon Rondón.

He is a player who works his socks and for me he hasn’t been given the level of service he deserves.

We really have struggled to deliver quality balls into the box this season. Rondon has had to feed off scraps.

And I believe if we do whip in better crosses, he will score goals.

As a striker, you are only as good as the service you get. Rondon has been an isolated and lonely figure at times so I would like to see us play two up front more often.

And if Pardew wants to bring in Afobe to join him up there then I’m all for it.

There will be a few fans who don’t like the fact he used to play for Wolves. But I moved from Albion to Wolves! What we all have to do now is get behind the manager. If sees an area of the team that needs strengthening and then identifies a player to do that – we must support him.
