Walsall defender Dan Scarr insists he would like Brian Dutton to stay on as head coach next season and believes he needs a full pre-season to get his message across.

Since the head coach took over from Darrell Clarke in February, he has overseen three wins in 18 games.

Having worked with this group of players from 2019, when he became assistant manager, Dutton has attempted to overhaul the style of play since becoming the main man.

His future beyond this season is still up in the air, however, after he called for clarity from the board.

It seems the players are behind him though as when asked if he would like Dutton to stay, Scarr said: “Yeah definitely. We’ve been with him for two years and everyone gets on with him.

“Everyone backs him and likes the style that he’s trying to play and implement.

“He’s not had a lot of time. The way it happened you don’t get much prep for things like that.

“I like the style he’s trying to play and the way he implements it, so giving him a pre-season he will get his style across.

“Every manager needs that good pre-season to get what they want out of players and get them to that fitness they need to be at to play that style.

“With the change in style the players need a different type of fitness. Having a good pre-season will help massively.”

Scarr has returned from a calf injury in recent weeks and made his first start back on Saturday when the Saddlers beat Scunthorpe United 2-0.

The 26-year-old is now pleased to be back among the fold for the final games of the season.

“I’ve had a hard five weeks,” Scarr said.

“Rev (club physio Marc Czuczman) is very thorough and has given me a beasting. I’m glad to be back training so I don’t have to do his sessions anymore.

“He’s good and very thorough.

“I was pushing him asking how long it was going to be. He does well at managing your expectations and what’s realistic. He’s put me through sessions and I felt good, so we went from there.”

With two fixtures remaining the Saddlers have secured League Two safety and now Scarr insists the club must take pride in the final games and play to win.

“In football you should be enjoying games and you play best when you don’t have any pressure,” Scarr added.

“There is some pressure on every single football match but you have to try and use it as ammunition for the game.

“Hopefully we can go and enjoy the last few games now. Even though there’s nothing riding on them, there’s still pride and it still means something.

“We need to finish the season strong and we want to get the wins for the gaffer as well. Although there’s none of that pressure that builds up, there’s still pressure on ourselves and those expectations. We want to enjoy the last few games and you enjoy them by winning.”
