The 22-year-old was signed in the summer on a short-term deal after making 12 appearances for Yeovil Town last season.

The former Birmingham academy product has had to be patient for his chance after only making substitute appearances in the early stages of the season.

He started in left-wing in the win over Scunthorpe and an impressive display meant he kept his place against Crawley – where he assisted Elijah Adebayo's first goal for Walsall before getting on the scoresheet himself – his first in professional football.

Now, McDonald is aiming to impress even further to earn himself a new contract at the Saddlers.

“I just want to carry on impressing, be positive going forward, create chances, score goals and get assists," he said.

"That’s my game so I just want to keep improving.

“Every game and every training session you need to put it all in so I need to work hard, keep improving and doing what I’m doing.

“I’m really enjoying my time at Walsall. I’m thankful for the great support from the fans.

“I was working hard. The gaffer has plenty of formations and different tactics so I’m just working on the training ground and waiting for my opportunity.

“I’m very pleased. I’m working hard on the training ground. I’m working on my shooting, crossing and adding end product to my game.

"It’s (the goal) been a long time coming but I’m happy and thankful to get it."

Manager Darrell Clarke, however, has said that McDonald still has a lot to do as he insists he isn't getting carried away with his recent positive performances.

"He's done alright in one game," he said.

"Whereas everybody gets carried away with it, I don't, I need to see him improve in the areas I want him to improve in.

"He's well aware of what I expect of him, not running 60 yards and giving the ball away against Southampton, giving the ball away in sloppy areas.

"There's plenty of work for the lad to do, played very well Saturday (against Crawley), the main reason why we won the game.

"Wes took his chance last week."
