The former Celtic centre-back enjoyed a successful loan spell at Walsall last season but opted to move to greater Manchester this summer instead of returning to the Banks’s Stadium on a permanent basis.

Fans will hope the opening day clash continues the drama between the League One rivals with both games ending in a 3-3 draw last season.

Following the clash with Lee Clarke’s men, Walsall will host their first home game of the season on August 12 when Oldham visit the Banks’s.

Whitney’s men then close out the opening month with a trip to recently promoted Portsmouth on August 19 before Bradford visit the West Midlands on August 26.

Other notable fixtures include a home derby with Shrewsbury on October 7 with the reverse clash at Greenhous Meadow taking place on March 10.

A favourable Christmas schedule sees the Saddlers travel to Rochdale on December 23 before a home game against Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day with Rotherham then visiting on December 30.

But fans face a daunting 420 mile round trip on New Year’s Day when Whitney’s men travel to take on Plymouth.

The Saddlers will also end the 46 game campaign with a long journey when they head to the Fylde Coast to take on Fleetwood on May 5.
