Glassboys are beaten at home

Stourbridge endured a flat atmosphere and performance as youthful Workington returned to Cumbria with maximum points.

The Glassboys fought back from behind thanks to well-taken strikes from Brad Birch and Luke Benbow, but quickly conceded a leveller and succumbed to Steve Rigg’s late penalty.

There was little to choose between the mid-table rivals as an end-of-season feel prevailed throughout but if either team deserved to pinch the points it was the visitors.

Workington led three minutes in when Rigg, one of two unmarked blue shirts at the back post, crashed in a header off underside of the bar from Robert Wilson’s corner.

Wolves loanee Nicu Carnat tried to inject some life into proceedings and went close with a twice-hit effort 15 minutes in.

The move of the match brought about the leveller as Carnat, Benbow and Chris Gallagher combined before Birch burst through and lashed in unerringly high across Aaran Taylor 26 minutes in. Leon Broadhurst cushioned wide at the near post before the break with Stourbridge on the front foot and they moved in front two minutes after half-time.

Benbow picked his spot with a 25-yard free-kick from the left of the box, caressing over the wall and inside the near post.

But the joy lasted less than a minute as Jordan Holt rolled into Leo Holliday, whose 18-yard shot trickled via a small deflection and crept into Matt Gould’s bottom left corner.

Little happened from there with Workington enjoying marginally better fortunes in the final third And when home defender Darryl Westlake tangled with Sam Smith in the box eight minutes from time, Rigg stroked in from 12 yards to decide matters.
