Contrasting fortunes at Masters

West Midlands golfers Robert Rock and Aaron Rai had wildly differing fortunes as they got their British Masters campaigns under way in Southport.

Staffordshire ace Rock moved into early contention thanks to a three-under-par round of 69.

However, the story was somewhat different for Rai – from Perton – as he struggled around the course in 77.

Seven bogeys and two birdies left him on five over par in a tie for 145th and a long way from making the cut today.

Rock, on the other hand, begins his second round today hoping to close on the leaders from 18th position.

He flew out of the traps yesterday with three birdies in his opening four holes, but then shared two birdies and two bogeys over the remaining 14.

He is six shots behind the early leader Matthew Jordan, who is competing in just his 12th professional event after a stellar amateur career.
