Overnight lane closures have been in place to allow the gantries to be fitted

Teams have been hard at work while parts of the motorway near Stafford have been closed over the last week, installing the new structures which will display traffic information for drivers.

Three large gantries, weighing 24 tones and spanning 18m, have been put in place along with two smaller ones.

With lanes closed to traffic all was quiet on the M6 - apart from the noise being created by the workmen.

The new gantries are being fitted as part of the project to create a smart motorway between Junctions 13 for Stafford and 15 for Stoke-on-Trent.

Traffic was moved to a single northbound contraflow lane overnight to allow the work to be carried out safely.

It comes ahead of more closures as changes are made to the contraflow system. Currently the contraflow is running on the northbound carriageway between junctions 14 and 15.

The northbound contraflow is now set to move to run between junction 13 and junction 14. Closures will take place, from 9pm until 6am, on Friday, December 6 and Wednesday, December 1 between Junctions 12 and 14 northbound, and Friday, December 13 at Junctions 14 to 16 northbound.

The long-running project to create a smart motorway has seen traffic running at reduced speeds on a 17-mile stretch of the M6.
