The council-run West Park is regarded as being one of the best examples of an unspoilt park from the Victorian era left in the country today.

The park picked up the coveted Trip Advisor prize for the fifth year running.

First opened in 1881 when it was called the People’s Park, the 18-hectare site is also widely regarded as being the city’s most popular open space and regularly attracts thousands of visitors from outside the city.

Councillor Steve Evans, Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for city environment said: “We are absolutely delighted that TripAdvisor has awarded West Park this Certificate of Excellence again.

“We are really proud of all our parks and play areas in Wolverhampton – they are very well-loved and used by residents and draw many people into the city.

“This is very well-deserved recognition, and I would like to thank all the park officers, environmental employees and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the grounds, wonderful floral displays and facilities that we have in this magnificent attraction.”

A variety of public events are held regularly in the park, including weekly summer brass band concerts on the recently restored bandstand, the annual Wolverhampton Summer Show, bonfire and fireworks display and Steam and Vintage Rally.

The park also boasts a large boating lake, a conservatory, and is home to a variety of wildlife. It is open to the public on a daily basis.
