Firefighters have advised people living near Wood Lane to keep their doors and windows closed while they tackle the 30,000 square metre fire.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "We got the call at 11.42am to Wood Lane in Pelsall to reports of a fire in the open.

"We sent four fire engines, a total of 20 firefighters.

"The first message they sent back said the incident involved heath and scrubland on fire measuring approximately 100 by 300 metres.

"Just after 1pm they said good progress has been made.

"The land is quite remote so they're using water-carrying backpacks and beaters to douse and beat the flames out."

Wood Lane takes people from Pelsall Wood towards Pelsall North Common local nature reserve.

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted saying: "Twenty firefighters from Walsall, Aldridge, Willenhall and Bilston are tackling a fire on heath and scrubland in the Wood Lane area of Pelsall.

"If you live nearby, please keep doors and windows closed as a precaution."
