The hole opened up in Stafford Street, Walsall, on May 21 after part of the road was seen to be gradually sinking at the junction with Proffitt Street.

Severn Trent had warned that repairs would take at least a month to complete after the four-metre wide and three-metre deep hole opened up when one of its sewers collapsed, but the work finished on Sunday morning after just over three weeks.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "Many thanks to everyone for being patient, and great work from our teams that have been working seven day weeks to get everything done."
