Chuggers are a regular sight on town centre streets

Groups who are trying to get people to sign up to direct debits – often referred to as "chuggers" – could face fines of £75.

It comes after a consultation was held over the issue in a bid to make the town centre safer through the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).

The move, by Stafford Borough Council, prohibits alcohol and dog fouling and will also see groups urging people to swap their utility providers also banned.

Concerns have been raised by the Institute of Fundraising over the potential ban, which has called on the authority to impose a flexible restriction.

The agreement could see the council control the days, location and the number of fundraisers on the street.

A decision will be made by the council's cabinet on Thursday. (
