The plea was made by Oldbury PDSA Pet Hospital, in Sandwell, after it had run out of supplies.

As a result, staff came up with the idea of launching an appeal on Facebook.

The Matthews Road-site has since been inundated with items.

Samantha Ellis, a veterinary care assistant, said: "We suggested putting the appeal out on Facebook as we had run out of newspapers and bedding, which help to keep our pet patients comfortable before and after their operations.

"We were completely overwhelmed by the reaction - we had over 3,000 responses.

"We’re actually struggling to find space to store everything now, but it will all be used.

"We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us during these difficult times."

However, while the vet's wishes were answered, staff say they are always in need of support.

Denise Talo, head nurse at the site, said: "More people than ever are being plunged into financial difficulty as a result of this crisis.

"We want to be able to continue to do our utmost to be there to prevent pets from suffering as a result of economic hardship – we are needed now more than ever.

"We know many people are facing financial uncertainty, so we’re grateful for any and all support that the pet-loving public can give us."

She added: "Due to current restrictions, we’re still only able to provide emergency and urgent care at the moment, and would ask anyone who needs help to check on our website before coming to PDSA.

"We’re still offering phone appointments and can send medications out or arrange for safe collection, to limit unnecessary travel.

"We’re exceptionally proud of how our teams have pulled together to ensure we can continue to save pets’ lives during incredibly difficult times."
