Arrest after police chase involving helicopter with suspect running off to Stourbridge canal

A chase through the streets of Stourbridge saw a police helicopter circling and officers out in force.

The chase saw the driver of a stolen Porsche with what were believed to be cloned plates speed off after being seen by officers from Brierley Hill Police while out on patrol in Stourbridge at around 12.30pm.

The car chase ended after the driver abandoned the car on Mill Race Lane and was seen running off down towards Canal Street and the Stourbridge Canal before he was later arrested.

A police helicopter was called into action to help with the search, while officers conducted a full area search to find the man, who was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

The car has now been recovered.

A spokesman for Brierley Hill Police said: "We saw a recently cloned and stolen car.

"It failed to stop and the driver abandoned the car, running into a nearby canal.

"Following an area search, he was located and arrested on suspicion of burglary with the car recovered."

A West Midlands Police spokesperson added: "A man has been arrested after a suspected stolen Porsche failed to stop for traffic officers in Merry Hill around 11.30 this morning.

"The car was pursued to Stourbridge ring road where the occupants decamped off Mill Race Lane with one of them jumping in the canal.

"A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving. He remains in custody. A second man is still being sought.

"Two other cars were damaged as the vehicle reached speeds of 70mph in a 30 limit."
