Birmingham City Council has announced the closure of some of its multi-storey car parks, as their usage has declined during the Covid-19 outbreak.

A number of the car parks in the city will close from the end of the day on Thursday.

The car parks include Dudley Street underground, Jewellery Quarter multi-storey, Markets multi-storey, Millennium Point multi-storey, Paradise Circus multi-storey, Pershore Street multi-storey, Town Hall multi-storey and Victoria Road (Sutton Coldfield) multi-storey.

Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE, the authority's cabinet member for transport and environment said: “We have been closely monitoring the impact of Covid-19 on traffic flows and have now taken the decision to close all of our multi-storey car parks, except Snow Hill.

“These car parks have had little to no usage since new Government guidelines on staying home were issued on March 23. The most sensible option at this time is to close the car parks until further notice, to avoid incurring unnecessary costs and to reduce environmental impact.”

To support those who are still travelling to work in the city centre, and are unable to work from home, the Snow Hill multi-storey car park will remain open, together with all of Birmingham City Council’s surface car parks and on-street pay and display bays.

The council have also suspended pay and display fees for both on and off-street parking, to provide key workers with more flexibility over where they park during the pandemic.
