Pc Jack Green, aged 27, has been charged with assault and is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The charge relates to an incident at New Cross Hospital, in Wolverhampton, on October 30, 2020.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct investigated the incident after receiving a conduct referral from West Midlands Police on February 19.

A spokesman for the IOPC said: "We investigated the conduct of Pc Jack Green, 27, while dealing with a man who was being detained for the purpose of a mental health assessment.

"This included looking at whether the officer’s actions were reasonable, proportionate and necessary.

"After careful consideration of the evidence, including body-worn video footage of the incident, we passed a file to the Crown Prosecution Service, who have authorised a charge of assault.

"Pc Green is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on May 27 at 10am."
