Officers spotted the black VW Golf on cloned plates in Hawthorne Road, Kingstanding, Birmingham, just before 1pm on Sunday.

The car made off and was pursued for several minutes – before the driver abandoned it in Hamm Walk, Erdington, where all three sprinted from the vehicle.

Police chased down a 15-year-old boy and 22-year-old woman as they ran into a park, while a 16-year-old boy – the suspected driver – was detained after being found in nearby gardens.

All three were arrested on suspicion of car theft and possessing an offensive weapon and the 16-year-old is also being questioned on suspicion of failing to stop for police.

Checks on the Golf revealed it was stolen three days earlier in Capstone Avenue, Birmingham.

Detective Inspector Al Teague from Force CID, said: “This was one of several arrests over the weekend of people we suspect are linked to serious criminality.

"It was a really good spot by response colleagues who realised the car was on false plates. Minutes later we’d arrested three people and recovered a stolen car and an axe. A great result.”

All three suspects remain in police custody for questioning.
