Operation Lightning aims to reduce serious injuries – and even death – on roads across the county.

And it will see police focus on speeding, phone use, drink and drug driving and drivers not wearing seatbelts.

Superintendent Jason Nadin, from Staffordshire Police, said the operation would run for six weeks across the county.

He said: "Operation Lightning is Staffordshire Police's focus on reducing death and serious injury on our road networks and also in relation to deterring and detecting criminal use of the roads.

"There is an issue out there we need to address and we are addressing it on a daily basis through our neighbourhood policing teams and our road policing unit – this is an enhancement of that.

"I want the public to feel reassured that this is what we're doing it for – to reduce those fears that people have in relation to the risks that are posed on the road network."

Checks will be carried out by marked police vehicles and motorcycles – with drivers pulled over to have their documentation checked.
