Mohammed Miah snatched cash and then returned to grapple with the 59-year-old victim so he could grab money which had fallen to the floor.

He made off with £80 following the robbery near a cashpoint in Bridge Street, in the town centre, on the evening of January 31 this year.

Officers identified 28-year-old Miah from CCTV and he was arrested at his home in Freer Street.

Miah pleaded guilty to robbery and was jailed for three years and four months at Wolverhampton Crown Court on April 16.

DC Martin Williams, from force CID, said: “Miah initially approached his victim for a cigarette lighter and then watched her withdraw cash before making a grab for it.

“He even had the nerve to push her out the way to pick up a few notes which had dropped on the floor after his initial lunge for cash.

“Miah fled but fortunately some of our eagle-eyed officers recognised him from footage secured from the area. He is now behind bars and unable to target others.”
