Almost 400 people have been arrested in one week across the West Midlands as part of a crackdown on domestic abuse.

Arrests have been made in a bid to tackle domestic abuse.

A total of 390 suspects have been cuffed for offences ranging from assaults to bullying behaviour and harassment.

It comes as almost 900 offences of the type are reported to West Midlands Police each week.

Superintendent Sally Simpson said: "We’ve had a week of intensive activity which has proved really successful. Many people have surrendered to us knowing that it’s only a matter of time before we come looking for them.

"Domestic abuse is a priority for us. We are putting more officers and investigators into domestic abuse teams in order to manage the increase levels of reporting and go after outstanding suspects."

Almost 60 offenders have been charged and put before the courts, while several Domestic Violence Prevention Orders with conditions designed to protect potentially vulnerable victims, have been secured.

Supt Simpson added: "We have teams of public protection officers who are specially trained to investigate domestic abuse cases and support survivors.

"We appreciate that reporting domestic offences to the police or a charity can be a difficult decision. We don’t underestimate the wider impact. But what we can say is that we will listen, help in any way we can, and most importantly, protect you."

The crackdown took place between January 25 and February 1.
