A floral tribute was placed at the base of the statue of the famous footballer in Dudley on Tuesday to mark his 83rd birthday.

However, they were nowhere to be seen the following day.

Rose Cook-Monk, founder of the Duncan Edwards Foundation, said: "We made them as we always do and one of Duncan's relations took a photograph the next day.

"And there was no sign of the flowers.

"I asked some people on the market and when I looked I realised they had actually been stolen.

"I've been putting flowers in commemoration at the site since the statue was first put up – and it's the first time the flowers have been taken.

"I was really shocked. There's never been any graffiti or vandalism so I was really upset by it.

"The fact someone thought 'I'm having them' is despicable.

"It hasn't stopped me from wanting to put flowers there, but I'm appalled someone would do it."

The flowers were laid by Tracey Smith, who is portraying Duncan's mother in a new play.

The foundation aims to raise money, in the name of the legendary Black Country footballer, to support young people in Dudley who have a sporting dream.
