The incident happened near to the Civic Hall

Two men were found on North Street, near to Wolverhampton Civic Hall, in the early hours of Sunday morning with serious injuries.

A third man sustained a cut to his hand – but West Midlands Police today revealed he had fled before officers arrived.

WATCH: Major investigation under way

The man sought medical treatment at the triage centre in the city and then got into a Go Cars taxi and asked to be taken to Dunkley Street – but was dropped off in Waterloo Road.

West Midlands Police has since launched an appeal to track him down to assist the ongoing investigation.

The entrance to the subway was cordoned off by police

He is described as white, 5ft 9ins tall, in his mid-20s and slim, with short black hair and a beard.

He is a Romanian national and speaks little English, police say.

Detective Sergeant Chris Jones, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are keen to trace the third man who was attacked to speak to him about the circumstances of this violent stabbing.

“Naturally he’ll have vital information about what happened and we’re keen for him to come forward and speak to us in order to progress the on-going inquiry and find the person responsible.

“We would also like to speak to anyone who was in the area in particular a member of the public who cycled through the subway just prior to the attack.

Molineux subway was also cordoned off during the investigation

"CCTV shows that he was chased for a short distance by one of the victims.”

Officers are carrying out further enquiries in the area, liaising with the community and trawling through CCTV footage for evidence today.

Forensic examinations of the scene and taxi have concluded, with various samples retrieved analysis.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
