Fire-hit Wolverhampton school rising from ashes

A school that was devastated by arsonists is rising from the ashes, with pupils and staff finally getting the chance to walk around their new building.

Wilkinson Primary, in Bradley, Bilston, was all but destroyed in October 2010. But a new building is being created to mark the dawn of a new era at the school, with the roof and windows being fitted in the last few days.

And now that the interior is being installed, youngsters have been able to have a look around the site.

Timber has been chosen for the frame as it will help keep heat in, because the school will be the latest to be built to Passivhaus standards, which reduces the amount of energy and heating needed through the design of the building. The charred remains of the school were demolished in October 2010.

The school was gutted by the huge blaze

The school's 357 pupils have been using 16 mobile buildings installed on the site since the blaze. The culprits were never caught by police.

Headteacher Tina Gibbon said: "Staff have all been in the building now and were able to go upstairs for the first time. It is really exciting and the work is moving forward very quickly now.

"It seemed to take quite a long time at first when the foundations were being laid but now the structure is up, it changes every week."
