The charity dog walk started outside Metro Bank on Dudley Street in Wolverhampton city centre and took in a circuit of West Park before heading back to the start.

More than 15 people and their canine friends took part in the walk on Sunday, August 23, which was sponsored by Metro Bank and organised by cancer campaigner Darren Richardson to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Darren, who has previously completed a sponsored bike ride from Wolverhampton to Bridgnorth, said the walk was a way to thank the nurses at Marie Curie for all the work they do.

He said: "My father died of cancer, as well as a few friends of mine, and those nurses were like angels for the care they gave him and, let's not forget, a lot of them are volunteers.

"I just wanted to raise as much money as I can to help them as they do so much to help people with the care they need and deserve more recognition for that."

Darren said he led the group down to West Park with his dog Snowball, carrying a collection bucket for Marie Curie and with another two collection tins left at Metro Bank for donations during the week.

The 50-year-old from Pennfields said he hoped to raise more than £500 from the walk and thanked everyone who had taken part in the walk.

He said: "It was good to see people come out and take part and I can say that everyone enjoyed themselves walking their dogs and enjoying the nice weather.

"I've been around dogs all my life and I thought it would be a good idea to get people together to do this walk.

"A few of the dogs played up in the park, chasing the wildlife and jumping in the water, but it just added to the fun of the day."

Anyone looking to donate to Marie Curie Cancer Care can go to mariecurie.org.uk and make a donation there.
