I want to repay West Brom and England, says hat-trick hero Saido Berahino

Hat-trick hero Saido Berahino today revealed his desire to repay Albion and England for giving him a "second chance in life".

The 20-year-old striker described his full Baggies debut as "incredible" after his 31-minute treble against Newport County last night fired Steve Clarke's side into round three of the Capital One Cup.

And Berahino, who came to England from Burundi as a 10-year-old having lost his father in the country's civil war, revealed his debt of gratitude to his club and England, who gave him a second under-21 call-up hours before yesterday's match.

"It (the war) is not something I like to talk about but it wasn't a great experience and I just thank God for giving me another opportunity to come to England and have a different life," he said.

"It's been an incredible journey. I had only been playing in England for about a year when I was picked up by West Brom and it's been unbelievable.

"West Brom's played a big role in my life. They have looked after me from a young age and I feel like I owe them something.

"Everyone's been great at West Brom and I want to thank them all. It's great I got noticed and can play for England too. England is a big part of my life as it gave me a second chance.

"Even though I'm not British-born I feel English as I have lived here for 10 years. It's a fantastic place to be."

Berahino scored his first Baggies goal on six minutes, bagged his second with a thunderbolt on 26 and then wrapped up his hat-trick from the penalty spot on 37.

He left The Hawthorns with the matchball signed by his team-mates but revealed he will give it to his mother Liliane, who came to England ahead of him to ensure her son's new life.

Albion head coach Steve Clarke said: "I'm delighted for the boy because he's worked ever so hard to get that chance."
