Wednesbury are sunk by leaders

The table-toppers made it four wins from four after a strong second-half display saw them overpower Wednesbury 36-10.

Wednesbury had more than matched their hosts during an opening half that ended with the scores level at 5-5.

But they paid the price for a slow start to the second half that allowed their hosts to take charge.

Wednesbury coach Gary Summers was naturally disappointed with the result. He said: “It was not the best performance and perhaps a reality check.

“Things that haven’t functioned in our structure that we have got away with, we didn’t get away with against a better team

“ I think we need to switch on to playing to what we can get away with instead of being too honest. Our opposition’s biggest gains so far have been from the referees so need to start pushing our gamesmanship.”

It was Wednesbury who struck first on Saturday when winger Rhys Nickle jinked his way across the line after 10 minutes. But the hosts back on level terms by the break following a successful drive from their scrum.

Old Salts came out all fired up for the second half and added two ties and a conversion inside 10 minutes.

That knocked Wednesbury out of their stride and a further three home tries and two conversions followed before Josh Harris scored a late try for Wednesbury.

Wednesbury entertain local rivals Handsworth in the RFU Senior Vase in Saturday (3pm).

Warley maintained their flying start Midlands 5 West (North) with a resounding 63-0 defeat of Dixoniains at Tat Bank Road.

The hosts ran in nine tries on their way to making it three wins from three league outings.

Warley top the table on points difference from Tenbury, who also boast a perfect record.
