David Davis this afternoon penned a new three-year contract at Wolves as their post-relegation rebuilding continued.

The midfielder has impressed under boss Terry Connor since he replaced Mick McCarthy in February and has been rewarded with a new deal.

Homegrown youngster Davis made his Premier League debut in the 2-0 defeat to Blackburn at Molineux last month and has made six appearances since.

The 21-year-old had been loaned out to Darlington, Walsall and Shrewsbury before spells at Inverness and Chesterfield this season.

I have been learning the trade whilst I've been out on loan and now I'm back here playing in the best league in the world. It's a big achievement for me.

"Obviously, us getting relegated has been a bitter disappointment but I think that we can bounce back and I would like to play my part in that objective," he said.

"This new contract really is the icing on the cake for me. It's secured my future at my club Wolves, the club I want to play for. It really is a dream come true."

And Connor insisted the starlet deserved a new deal after proving himself against the Premier League big-guns.

"He's done well in his own right and he's earned a contract – all I've done is give him a chance in the team," he said.

"It's down to the fact that he's playing really well against people like Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry.

"And he deserved it. He came back from his latest loan and he'd done the process we asked him to do.

"He'd got better and better out on loan and was more and more of an influence, and he's shown he's ready to play here."

Davis was recalled from his loan at the Spireites to cover for injuries but has been one of the shining lights for Wolves in their battle against the Premier League drop – which they lost after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

He made his Wolves debut in the 4-0 Carling Cup win at Northampton at the start of the season under former boss McCarthy.

Connor added:?"All those building blocks and stepping stones he's taken on have prepared him for this and he's taken his chance with both hands.

"He just wants to play and run around. He's not a 17-year-old kid any more – he's 21 and he's ready to play.

"He's trained with the first team a lot and he knows them. He's great to have here."
