Slaven Bilic's side led twice at The Valley with goals from Kenneth Zohore and Hal Robson-Kanu coming either side of a Josh Davison strike.

But a fiery and entertaining clash in the Capital ended all-square when the hosts equalised with 15 minutes to play through Tom Lockyer.

That goal ensured the hosts got the point their performance deserved with a draw, overall, a fair result.

But while Albion will be disappointed not to have got themselves over the line after leading twice, they are now back on top of the Championship after Leeds were beaten at home by Sheffield Wednesday.

Report

Having rested a host of key names for the cup clash at The Valley just six days earlier, Albion's team had a much more familiar feel as they switched their focus back to the league.

In total, Bilic made nine changes from that side that clinched a place in the FA Cup fourth round with only Conor Townsend and Zohore retaining their starting spots.

It meant the Baggies lined up in their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation but with Hal Robson-Kanu in the number 10 role, Matheus Pereira wide on the left and Zohore up front.

Charlton, under the guidance of Lee Bowyer, lined up in a 3-5-1-1 system with Connor Gallagher operating just behind Davison in attack.

Albion started the game looking a touch rusty and were fortunate not to fall behind when, in the sixth minute, Sam Johnstone passed the ball straight to Gallagher.

But the Chelsea loanee then spared the keeper's blushes by firing wide from 18-yards when he really should have hit the target.

Gradually, the Baggies started to find their feet and they opened the scoring just past the 20 minute mark with a goal created and scored by Zohore.

After initially winning the ball from a defender, the striker charged into the box before seeing a low drive blocked by a sliding Lockyer.

But the forward reacted quickest to pounce of the loose ball and hit a low drive which sailed past Dillon Phillips and into the net.

The goal was harsh on the home side. But just six minutes later they were back on terms.

Following a short corner, the ball was sent to the back post with Naby Sarr heading it back into the danger area.

And there waiting was Davison who nodded the ball into the bottom corner for his first professional goal.

From that point, the half proved to be something of a stalemate until a bizarre incident just before half-time that almost saw Albion regain the lead.

After clashing in the middle of the park, Robson-Kanu and Lockyer essentially started to wrestle with each player refusing to let the other go.

But referee Jarred Gillet allowed play to go on with Charlton initally pressing forward.

Albion, though, won the ball and countered with Pereira entering the box before seeing a shot blocked by a defender.

In truth, the Brazilian should have done better.

But with the ball out of play, Gillet opted to call Robson-Kanu and Lockyer over with both picking up yellow cards.

Incredibly, just seconds after the re-start, Albion regained the lead with Pereira finding Sawyers who then move the ball on to Phillips.

The wideman then delivered a low cross which was met by Robson-Kanu - with the striker's poke towards goal deflecting off Sarr and into the net.

The goal sparked a frantic spell of football that saw both teams pile forward.

For Charlton, Alfie Doughty entered the box before drilling a strike into the side netting.

While for Albion, two flowing counter-attacked ended with both Darnell Furlong and Phillips seeing dangerous crosses just snuffed out.

Bilic's side were looking dangerous whenever they were able to break.

Charlton, though, were also carrying a threat and they again pulled themselves level in the 76th minute.

A cross from the left was met by Lockyer who powered a header towards goal.

And while Johnstone got a hand to it, he was only able to push the ball against the inside of the post with it then bouncing over the line and in.

From that point there was a sense the game could either way.

But while both teams got into dangerous positions, neither were able to create a clear chance to snatch a victory with a draw, overall, a fair result.
