West Brom seek quickie divorce from Callum McManaman

Albion have dropped their asking price for forgotten man Callum McManaman as he struggles to make an impact on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Baggies had previously wanted to recuperate the £4.75million they spent on Tony Pulis’s first signing, but will now listen to offers below that in order to remove him from the wage bill.

McManaman has only started two games in the Championship since he joined the Owls in January as Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal drip-fed him minutes from the bench.

The 26-year-old was being used as an impact substitute but chances have dried up completely in the last six games, all of which have been won by Wednesday as they secured a place in the play-offs.

There was no option to buy the winger included in McManaman’s loan deal and unless he dramatically influences the promotion push during the play-offs, Caravalhal will send him back to the Baggies without putting any offer on the table.

McManaman still has a year left on the three-and-a-half-year contract he signed at the end of January 2015.

But Albion head coach Tony Pulis has made it clear the FA Cup winner is not in his long-term plans.

Pulis doesn’t trust the former Wigan man to work backwards in his system and last season he criticised him for diving against Southampton.

“You hold your hand up and say I made a mistake,” he admitted during a phone-in with fans in February. “Signing players is like getting married, you can court them for years, but until you marry them you don’t know what you’re getting into.”

Last summer a trio of Championship clubs, including Newcastle, were interested in McManaman but no deal could be agreed with any of them.

He spent the first half of the season exiled in the under-23s before Wednesday picked him up on loan early in the January window.

Although he has not impressed Carvalhal enough to stay at Hillsborough, McManaman has made a difference in a handful of games and the Baggies are hoping he’s done enough to interest other Championship clubs.
