Walsall show faith in new boss Dean Keates

Chief executive Stefan Gamble believes Walsall’s pursuit of Dean Keates shows how much faith the club has in its new manager.

Keates was appointed Saddlers boss earlier this month after the board agreed a compensation package to release him from his contract at Wrexham. It’s the first time Walsall have paid to land a manager under owner Jeff Bonser.

And Gamble feels it was important the Saddlers went out to secure their number one target rather than simply waiting to see who applied.

“Over the years managers have come and gone and we have had different recruitment processes in place,” the chief executive said. “Sometimes we have sat and waited to see what applications have come in. But this time we did not want to be in that position.

“We received a large number of applications for the job. But from the moment we made a change, Dean was the number one target.

“Once we had established that, it was up to us to go get him and see if we could do a deal with Wrexham which thankfully they were very professional about.

“I would like to thank them for that. And I’m very pleased we have been able to get our man.”
