The Saddlers needed to win and results to go their way and they were pegged back by Bury with a late leveller.

Unfortunately for them, events at the County Ground saw Swindon take promotions matters out of their hands in a 2-0 victory.

Lethargic Walsall took the lead against the run of play after seizing the initiative in the 29th minute through Febian Brandy.

Brandy was the benefeactor as Jamie Paterson put the ball in low to James Baxendale, who teed up Brandy for the finish.

The hosts had looked shaky at the back and were lucky not to be behind after Bury rattled the crossbar after a defensive mix-up.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and defender Dean Holden got themselves into a muddle and Janson Clarke-Harris tried to captialise.

But Clarke-Harris could only nod against the woodwork in the 11th minute, after heading over Tom Soares' cross three minutes earlier.

A largely-uneventful second-half only sprung into life in the last minute when Bury suddenly levelled with a last minute goal.

Shakers favourite Efe Sodje, on for Carl Regan in the second-half, tapped in after Clarke Harris' 20-yard free kick rattled the post.
