The long throw of James O’Neil was causing the hosts problems in the first half finding the head of Joe Kenton who headed over the bar.
Before the break Ashton responded and Fisayo Adarabioyo saw his powerful strike fly over the bar at the opposite end.
On the 54th minute it was Jack Redshaw who went close again for Ashton beating several Rangers players before seeing his effort fly just wide.
Harry Coates was next to go close for Ashton heading just wide from Redshaw’s cross as the hosts searched for a winner.
The Boro also went close for sealing a winner and Kenton headed wide before substitute Tyrone Ofori rattled the post with 12 minutes remaining as the teams cancelled each other out.
