Match-winner Trezeguet has opened up on the Egyptian connection that sent Villa back to Wembley.

The winger fired home a cross from his close friend and international team-mate Ahmed Elmohamady in the third minute of stoppage time to clinch a 3-2 aggregate win over Leicester City in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final.

Trezeguet revealed how the pair have often practiced the move on the training ground.

“We always talk in training about that ball,” he said. “When he (Elmohamady) gets the ball I say to him ‘far post’ but in Arabic and nobody else understands.

“He did it and we scored. Now we go to Wembley. It is the best feeling.”

Trezeguet, who had been brought on as a 77th minute substitute, paid tribute to supporters for helping drive the team on.

“The fans made it a great game. We don’t play alone,” he said.

“If the fans are with us, the supporters, we can get the results we want. We need them. It is not just about 11 players, or 30 players. With the fans we can do what we want.”

Boss Dean Smith had also brought Elmohamady on in the 84th minute for Frederic Guilbert. Rarely can a pair of substitutions have proved quite so effective.

“Whether it was inspired or just felt it was right to get Trez on, I don’t know?” said Smith.

“I knew he (Trezeguet) would give us some energy, Keinan Davis the same. I thought Fred was tiring as well and Elmo’s put in a superb ball in at the end. It’s great when they can come on and make the impact.”

The March 1 final will be Villa’s third trip to Wembley in as many seasons, with the club having played in each of the last two Championship play-off finals.

Villa are targeting a sixth victory in the League Cup, which they last won in 1996, the club’s last major triumph.
