Monday night’s visit of West Ham will see Villa in action for the first time since last month’s controversial 1-0 defeat Crystal Palace, when Smith’s team saw a last-gasp equaliser ruled out.

And the boss said: “There is a burning desire to right the wrongs. I can sense that.

“The players all had a couple of days off. We’ve obviously had a few go away on international duty and you do wonder what the intensity in training will be like when there are a few missing.

“But it has been very good. We have had some tough sessions, some double sessions and training games. They are itching for that next game.”

Summer signing Marvelous Nakamba is pushing for a Premier League debut.

The 25-year-old has been working on his fitness since joining in an £11million switch from Brugge.
