The 30-year-old had not featured for Villa since suffering the injury in last month’s 1-0 defeat at QPR and was recently forced to pull out of international duty with Iceland.

On Thursday evening Bjarnason posted a photo on Instagram from his hospital bed, with a message which read: “Surgery went well. I’ll be back stronger than ever.”

Bjarnason has made just nine appearances for Villa this season but had started the first three games following Dean Smith’s appointment as head coach.

Villa, meanwhile, remain hopeful over the fitness of key duo James Chester and John McGinn ahead of Sunday’s Second City derby with Blues.

Full-back Neil Taylor is expected to be available, after returning to training on Thursday following an ankle injury.
