Wolverhampton car dealership hopes to demolish buildings and expand site with new showroom
A major car dealership in Wolverhampton is planning to demolish its existing premises' buildings and extend the firm’s business by constructing a new showroom, workshop and offices.
Mercedes Benz on Penn Road, between Mander Street and Merridale Street just outside the city centre, currently has two buildings on its site.
Following demolition work, the dealership plans to expand operations with the construction of a second showroom alongside the new one. A vehicle workshop, offices and associated staff facilities will also be built.
The addition of a second showroom will require the company to employ extra staff.
The application, lodged by Lookers Motor Group, also outlines extensive landscaping work to clear an area of hardstanding and an overgrown plot on the site.
A statement from Taylor Design Architects, the agents acting on behalf of the dealership, said: “The site is currently occupied by two buildings which are central to the area, and the plan is to demolish both of these to make way for new dealership buildings.
“The works include the demolition of two existing buildings – a Mercedes Benz showroom or workshop building and a small workshop or office building, currently vacant, and the construction of a new building containing a showroom, two linked smaller showrooms, a vehicle workshop, SMART repair, valeting facilities and associated offices and staff facilities.”
The application also includes plans for 43 customer parking spaces, 84 display spaces and 64 compound parking spaces for use by the car showroom. A sheltered cycle parking lot with eight spaces has also been proposed.
The plans further include details to open up a disused entrance to the dealership premises from Mander Street.
Planning bosses at Wolverhampton Council are expected to make a decision on the application in the near future.
