Neighbourhood blighted by people dropping rubbish

Problems with constant littering in a Wolverhampton neighbourhood have prompted a leading city councillor to take the matter into her own hands.

Councillor Beverley Momenabadi leads residents in the litter pick

Councillor Beverley Momenabadi, who represents Ettingshall, said she had received a lot of reports of people dropping litter both in the streets and along the canal towpaths in the area.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, Councillor Momenabadi got together a group of volunteers, made up of local residents, in order to carry out a litter pick along the canals in Ettingshall and also on the streets.

Once they finished, the team had collected six bags of litter, which included everything from cans to clothing, that had been dumped either in the streets or along the canalside.

The litter picks are just one of many initiatives that Councillor Momenabadi has been undertaking in her ward to crack down on littering problems. She has recently had two new litter bins installed in the area and sent out leaflets to residents in order to raise public awareness.

Councillor Momenabadi said: “Littering is an ongoing issue in Ettingshall and other areas within the city.

“There is no excuse for dropping litter or not picking up your dog’s poo. It makes the neighbourhood look dirty and and anyone caught doing it will be issued with a fine.

“In response to the littering in some of the hotspots, I’ve organised litter picks and had bins installed in the ward.

“It was great to have a local group of residents out who are really motivated to keep the area clean. We’ll be making this a regular activity.

“We want everyone to respect our neighbourhood and work with us to ensure we’re all proud to live here.

“Now I want people to spread the word – if you get caught littering or not picking up your dog’s poo, you can receive a fine of up to £75 fine."
